A little over a year ago I attended a conference where part of the discussion was about free-enterprise, welfare, and social justice. When it comes to helping people who have been disenfranchised from our society for whatever reasons, one speaker described the differences between the approaches Republicans and Democrats take. Here is a summary of what he said:
“If a Republican hears a drowning person screaming in a river 50 yards from shore, he will throw the victim a 25 yard long rope and say, “You do your part and I will do mine.”
“If a Democrat hears a drowning person screaming in a river 50 yards from shore, she will throw the victim 100 yards of rope…and then let go of her end.”
I can’t remember the exact point of the story, but I thought it was funny and for some reason still think of that it often.
What do you think it means? What do you think are the differences between Republicans and Democrats when it comes to social-justice?
What should the Christians response be?
